Diameter is the only thing compared here. Width, load index, speed rating and whether the tire clears the fender are still the shop’s call.
Reading the number
The three parts run left to right. The first number is the width of the tread across the tire, in millimetres. The second is the aspect ratio, a percentage: it says how tall the sidewall is compared with that width, so a smaller number means a shorter sidewall. The letter R stands for radial, which is how almost every passenger tire has been built since the seventies. The last number is the wheel the tire mounts on, and that one is in inches.
The letters after the size
A size is usually followed by two more marks. The load index is a number that stands for a weight the tire is rated to carry, and the speed rating is a letter that stands for a speed it is rated to hold. Neither is a target to aim at. They are the floor the vehicle was built around, so a replacement should match or beat what the door sticker asks for. Your shop reads both off the sidewall before they sell you anything.
